Classic Game Review: Phantom Club 1988
Dusko Dimitrijevic is a name to be reckoned with, if only because it is difficult to pronounce. This young programmer comes from Yugoslavia, and the first major game he wrote, M.O.V.I.E, was a huge hit. That was in March 1986 and we have had to wait awhile for the second, which is a follow up in style but not in theme.
Classic Game Review: Basket Master 1988The fourth Dynamic release through Imagine is a one- on-one basketball simulation based around the exploits of Fernando Martin, one of the world’s top players. First out is the Amstrad CPC version, with other 8-bit formats following as fast as possible. Coding and graphics by Dynamic themselves, except for the Commodore, which is by Martin McDonald (also working on Platoon) and Gary Besillo.
Review of Puzzle Quest 2 – The Game DesignWhen Steve Fawkner created the world of Etheria which gave birth in 1989 to Warlords, he certainly did not know, until twenty years later, that his world is at the confluence of trends that are competing in the video games market. With Puzzle Quest in 2007, Fawkner and Infinite Interactive mixed casual gaming and role-play, an alchemy that took the time to solidify in two versions. Through this series of Puzzle Quest, Fawkner offers an addictive gameplay, but also a fascinating lesson in game design.
Classic GamReview: Buggy Boy 1988Many moons ago, Elite opted for the battle to secure coin-op licences, and when measured against their opponents in the race they have had a fair measure of success with the finished results, undoubtedly topping out with Ghosts ‘n’ Goblins. Space Harrier fared less well than they would have liked on the 8-bit machines, but it looks like a winner on the Atari ST. Now Taito car racing game Buggy Boy across is the most popular formats, Commodore first, ST next, and the rest to follow very soon.
Classic Game Review: Chess Master 2000Having taken America by storm, The Software Tool works’ Chess master 2000 now hits these shores courtesy of Electronic Arts. With a number of awards already under its belt – including first place in the 1986 US Open Personal Computer Chess Championship – this is now available across four formats: the Commodore 64/128, the Atari ST, the Amiga and the IBM PC and compatibles. The program includes most of the features which are now taken for granted in computer chess.
PC Game Review: SairaNifflas, the creator of the indie platformer titles Knytt, Kyntt Stories, and Within a Deep Forest, has finally started charging money for his latest title (also a platformer), Saira. The eponymous main character, Saira, is trying to repair her teleporter in order to reach her former partner and find out what has happened to the rest of humanity, who seem to have disappeared. The puzzles are hit-and-miss, but otherwise this a fine example to represent independent games.

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions ReviewSpider-Man: Shattered Dimensions is the first Spider-Man game for major console release in several years. Once again, it’s been developed by Activision, but I had high expectations as they’ve had such a long development cycle.
